Thanks to Claude Potts, Librarian for Romance Language Collections at UC Berkeley, and Deolinda Adão, Exectuive Director of UC Berkeley's Portugues Studies Program, a new interactive exhibit is up on the THL. Portugal 1910-2010: An Exhibit Commemorating the Centennial of the Portuguese Republic is currently on display at the Bancroft Library, but users can also visit the THL's online galleries to experience the exhibit virtually, leave comments on the images, find links to more resources, and interact with the curators.
We are very excited to see Portugal 1910-2010 go live on the lab, because it is the first to use a Lab project as a virtual annex to an exhibit currently being displayed on campus. The curators have set up "galleries" in the online project to mirror the different themes of the exhibit on the centenary of the Portugues Republic. Navigating these galleries, users can see archival images documenting the end of the monarchy and the birth of democracy in Portugal. Potts and Adão hope that users browsing through the online galleries will share their reactions to the exhibit (the beautifully arranged display cases in the Bancroft do not allow viewers to leave comments). The online accompaniment to the exhibit also offers links to further information that may interest viewers.
Hopefully this excellent project will be a model for future experiments with THL as an online resource to accompany campus exhibits, talks, and conferences. For suggestions on how you might do something similar, please contact us at thl@lists.berkeley.edu.
