Neurophilosophy

Project Description

The Townsend Center Working Group in the Philosophy of Mind is an interdisciplinary project in philosophy, psychology and neuroscience. Our aim is to promote dialogue and foster collaboration among researchers in these overlapping disciplines.

Our meetings consist of a talk and a question session. They're led by an invited speaker, usually from Berkeley or another Bay area institution, whose work is of particular relevance to the interests of the group. We gather for refreshments after each meeting, so that graduate students, post-doc's and faculty from different departments can get to know one another.

The Townsend Humanities Lab gives us an exciting opportunity to extend our reach beyond the Bay area. Our discussions will continue online, and if you share the interests of the group but can't get to our meetings, we encourage you to join the group and get involved.

Plans for 2009-10

Our topic for 2009-10 will be attention.

Recent years have seen great advances in the study of attention in philosophy, psychology and neuroscience. The notion of attention is increasingly important in each of these disciplines, and faculty at Berkeley have been at the forefront of this progress. Yet it's not clear to what extent one unitary phenomenon is being studied from these different angles, and as a result it's not clear in what ways philosophers, psychologists and neuroscientists can learn from one another's work.
